Job Title: Fractional Director of Engineering (Contract / Part-Time) Location: Remote Type: Fractional / Contract Duration: Ongoing (estimated 10–20 hours/week) Overview We’re a fast-paced, creative software agency with a history of games development and a future in Agentic workflows startup seeking a senior-level engineering leader to join us on a fractional basis. We hope this to turn into a full time role over the next year. As our Director of Engineering, you'll serve as a technical advisor and quality champion—helping shape our systems, tools, and development culture. This role is ideal for a deeply experienced software architect or engineering director who thrives on advising growing technical teams and ensuring modern, high-quality practices are followed. Key Responsibilities Architectural & Tools Oversight Review proposed technical architectures, infrastructure choices, and toolchains. Provide clear, actionable feedback to ensure scalability, performance, maintainability, and alignment with current best practices. Research and recommend industry-standard approaches for new features or system changes. Code Quality & Review Conduct regular code reviews across multiple repositories (primarily in Unity, web, or full-stack environments). Establish and maintain standards for code quality, modularity, testing, and documentation. Provide coaching to developers on improving implementation, design patterns, and maintainability. Team Guidance Act as a trusted mentor for the development team. Share insights on process improvements, technical debt management, and delivery velocity. Help define and refine technical onboarding materials and documentation for engineers. Need-to-Have Deep familiarity with modern and emerging best practices, tools, and workflows used by high-performing development teams. Familiarity with the design and construction of agentic workflows, including AI-driven processes and modular task automation. Ability to stay current with fast-changing development trends and apply them effectively in real-world engineering decisions. Ideal Background 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 3+ years in an architecture or engineering leadership role. Experience advising or working within startup environments. Proficiency in reviewing full-stack web, mobile, and/or game (Unity-based) architectures. Strong familiarity with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, testing frameworks, and deployment strategies. Comfortable staying hands-off from day-to-day development, while providing high-leverage guidance and oversight. Engagement Details This is a part-time, fractional leadership role. Work is asynchronous and flexible, with weekly or biweekly touchpoints. Must be able to review materials independently and offer high-impact feedback proactively.
