I have an old friend who has been in federal prison for over thirty years, and he believes that all he has seen could, with the right partner, be used to match and surpass the unexpected best-selling success of Pete Earley's THE HOT HOUSE a few decades ago. That was a book about the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas, and also, due to events within the prison, about the federal "supermax" prison in Marion, Illinois. My friend spent most of his time at the far more notorious and interesting U.S. Penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and the infamous supermax which replaced Marion, the "Administrative Maximum," or "ADX", in Florence, Colorado. Lewisburg was known as "The Big House," because half of all prison killings in the 1970s-1990s occurred in these one of six “high” level federal prisons, and the ADX is sometimes referred to as the "Alcatraz of the Rockies" because Marion literally replaced Alcatraz in 1963 and the ADX replaced Marion in 1995. In its history, Lewisburg was home to Lucky Luciano, Al Capone, Jimmey Hoffa, the leaders of the "Pizza Connection," leaders of the "Machetteros" freedom fighters of Puerto Rico, the last Gambino (extradited from Italy), one of the "Walker Spy Family,' one of the real-life "Overnight Bandits" fictionalized in the Bruce Willis/Billy Bob Thornton movie BANDITS, the bank-robbery record-breaking Irish gangster Chucky Flynn, leaders of the El Rukin street gang that Quaddaffi paid to blow up the bridges in the U.S., and other criminal notables. Lewisburg was also the sight of the final massacre that resulted in the R.I.C.O takedown of the universally feared Aryan Brotherhood. The ADX has been home to the "Unabomber", the Atlanta "Olympic Bomber”, the "Twentieth Highjacker" from 9/11, plus Timothy McVeigh, Ramzi Yusef, the leaders of the Mexican Mafia, the most feared man in the Bureau of Prisons, "Terrible" Tommy Silverstein, and most recently El Chapo. My friend, who is a skillful writer himself, wants a co-worker, not a co-author--his co-worker can write the book and be its sole author. This project needs a skillful researcher/interviewer and writer to do the "outside" work that my friend cannot do but such a project requires for excellence. This story must be told with inside knowledge and personal experience, but each part should also be independently verified and supplemented by a professional who can access public records and talk to staff and inmates to produce a work read with as much credibility as fascination. Few prisoners in this large system have the requisite knowledge, and, even more rare, the system-wide respect of sometimes notorious and rarely talkative convicts, which alone makes interviews by an investigator or writer a possibility. Due to changes in the average American man in recent years, the "wild west" days when USP Lewisburg was "The Big House"--a nickname its Corrections Officers wore proudly on their jackets--are over, it having been turned into a "Special Management Unit"; and the ADX is steadily turning into an asylum for lunatics. This is a story about American history that should be told, and this may be the last man capable of doing it justice. What is required is a good investigator and writer, without guile or socio-political bias, because old-school convicts discern both quickly. Location in the Florida area is important since a routine of written exchanges and perhaps some phone calls will have to be supplemented occasionally with direct communications in a visitation room of the Federal Correctional Complex in Coleman, for sensitive information about others that cannot simply be related in monitored formats.
