Category: Writing Services – Editing & Proofreading Expertise Level: Expert in children’s educational books with 1) experience editing for the elementary age reader, and 2) education/background as a reading specialist Estimated Project Length: 2–4 weeks per book (longer-term potential across full series) Expected Word Size: 35,000 – 40,000 words inclusive of reading comprehension questions, mini-test and final assessment ________________________________________ Project Overview: We're launching a new children’s book series designed to help elementary-aged students (K–5) build reading comprehension skills through short fictional stories followed by Common Core–aligned reading comprehension questions. Each story is 400–500 words, engaging, and written to support 15-minute daily reading sessions with a parent or caregiver. The first book will be targeting readers at the 2nd grade level. We’re looking for a Developmental Editor with a strong background in elementary literacy education to help ensure each book is developmentally appropriate, instructionally sound, and engaging for both kids and parents. Who We’re Looking For: You are an experienced educator, literacy specialist, or children’s educational editor with: • 5+ years working with K–5 educational content (classroom or editorial) • Deep knowledge of Common Core ELA standards, especially for grades K–5 • A passion for creating engaging and accessible content for young readers • Strong editorial judgment, attention to developmental appropriateness, and the ability to make reading fun without losing educational depth • Familiarity with what types of stories attract and engage readers at each grade level, to help guide the writing during the process to ensure stories are enjoyable and drive reader to desire to read on a consistent basis. ________________________________________ What You’ll Do: • Edit and refine short stories for grade-level vocabulary, clarity, pacing, and engagement • Review and revise comprehension questions to ensure alignment with grade-level Common Core reading standards (e.g., RL.2.1–RL.2.7) • Ensure consistent tone, style, and learning progression across the book • Make light developmental suggestions to strengthen educational impact, scaffold comprehension skills, and enhance parent-child interaction • You will need to proof and edit based on US English. • You will need you to provide 2 copies, one copy with tracked changes, and another with track changes accepted. ________________________________________ About the First Book: • Grade Level: 2nd Grade • Format: ~30 stories, 400–500 words each, followed by ~5 - 7 reading comprehension questions. o 2 additional stories, ~500 words each, with one after story number 20, and the second after story number 40, will feature more reading comprehension questions. The mid-point story will feature a mini reading comprehension test of 7-10 questions, and the final story test will consist of 10 reading comprehension questions which includes an answer key and scoring guide for the parent/caregiver • Deliverables: Full editorial review and revision suggestions in Word, with comments and light line edits ________________________________________ Why This Project? • Make a direct impact on how children learn to love reading • Help parents build confidence in supporting literacy at home • Collaborate on a meaningful, long-term educational brand ________________________________________ To Apply, Please Include: 1.
