We’re looking for a detail-focused, romance-savvy proofreader to join our editorial team on a freelance basis. If you have a sharp eye, a love for the genre, and a deep respect for an author’s voice, this might be the perfect fit. What This Role Involves: This is strictly a proofreading position. The manuscript will already be polished. Your role will be to catch typos, punctuation mistakes, formatting issues, and small inconsistencies. You will not be expected to rework sentences, shift tone, or overhaul the manuscript in any way. We’re Looking for Someone Who: -Has experience with romance fiction across a range of subgenres (contemporary, historical, paranormal, etc.). -Is comfortable working with The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) but can just as easily follow a custom style guide when provided. Our style guide takes priority—flexibility and precision matter. -Understands how to polish text without flattening voice. We’re not looking for a proofreader who applies academic rules rigidly at the expense of storytelling rhythm or emotional tone. -Brings real experience in traditional publishing. This is not a role for someone whose background is primarily in self-publishing. Familiarity with the standards and workflows of established publishing houses is essential. -Values clean, genre-aware prose and knows how to support that without overstepping. Important Notes: This is not affiliated with FPA or similar programs. We are not producing churn-and-burn content, and we are not looking for someone trained to treat fiction like an assembly line product. An MFA is not required and does not automatically give you an edge. In fact, we’ve found that some MFA-trained editors tend to overwrite or revise unnecessarily. That said, if you do have an MFA and understand the difference between academic voice and commercial fiction, we’re happy to hear from you, as long as you also have hands-on experience with traditionally published romance. You’ll be working with writers who value clarity, consistency, and character-driven storytelling—and who won’t appreciate proofreading that reads like a workshop critique. Compensation: $30/10k words Start Date: Flexible, but soon If this sounds like your kind of project, please send a cover letter including a brief intro and either relevant samples or a list of romance titles you’ve proofed or edited, as well as some indication of how fast you can edit. We'll be going through applications this weekend and will reach out to prospects on Monday. We’re excited to find someone who knows romance fiction inside and out!
