Project Overview: 1. The challenge I need solved: I am seeking a digital illustrator to create four images for which your illustrations will be sent out to become large format prints for a museum exhibit. 2. My business goals: I am part of an art team responsible for putting on an exhibit which will showcase the history of a local native American tribe to a local town in South east Connecticut. 3. My timeline: My timeline is short. I would like the images back by June 2nd. 4.) Project Description: The freelancer will recreate four digital art designs of four “Wampum Belts” from the provided photos which depict the story of the native American tribe through its traditional and cultural relationship with a local town, Mystic Connecticut. This is the core mandatory aspect of the job. Each belt depicts an era in history. The four eras are: Belt 1.PRE- CONTACT THE RELATIONSHIP WITH MYSTIC PRE-CONTACT – The imagery of this wampum belt reflects the Pequot community pre-contact Belt 2. CONFLICT THE FORCED MIGRATION FROM MYSTIC – The imagery of this wampum belt reflects the year of the Pequot War & Massacre resulting in the forced migration from Mystic. Belt 3. POST CONTACT THE ESTABLISHMENT OF MPTN/EPTN RESERVATIONS – The imagery of this wampum belt reflects the establishment of tribal reservations. Belt 4. PEQUOTS TODAY THE BEGINNING OF THE RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF PEQUOT & MYSTIC FOR THE FUTURE -The imagery of this wampum belt reflects the Pequot Community of today with the intent of reconnecting to the homeland of Mystic territory The photographs provided are what I am asking the freelancer to recreate. Belt # 2 has the number 1636 which is broken up. I am asking to freelancer to try to make the numbers more prominent. While there is some creative freedom in this project, the purple patterns in the wampum belts (shown in the photos) must be maintained. The patterns already properly depict each era. The chosen illustrator will also have the creative flexibility in terms of things like display angle, adding fringe on the ends of the belts, and perhaps coloration. What I am after are good photorealistic illustrations of these belts, scaled where they can be printed and seen from a distance in a large gallery. BACKGROUND ON WAMPUM MATERIALS: It is also important to note that Wampum Belts are made from physical Purple and white tube beads. The purple beads make up the images, while the white beads act like a canvass or background for the images (the stories) If you look carefully that the beads, you will see light stripes which are known as "Striations" which adds character to each belt made. Wampum belts are made primarily from quahog shell beads (white and purple) woven into patterns on a base of leather, sinew thread, or other plant fibers. The wampum beads themselves are crafted from the shells of quahog clams, with white beads being more common and purple beads (found at the hinge and edge of the shell) being highly prized. 2. What qualifications am I looking for? The type of illustration freelancer that I am looking for is someone with both hand drawing and digital drawing art skills. The freelancer should be comfortable sketching on physical drawing tablets (physical pencils or brushes) as well as drawing on electronic tablets (Wacom or Ipad) I would prefer an illustrator who can work very quickly, but accurately. The end design will be digital art files. 3. What do I expect the finished product look like, and what is the ultimate goal? What I am after are good photorealistic illustrations of these belts. The digital art files must be scaled where all four images can be printed and seen from a distance in a large gallery. One image per wall of a hall. The print dimensions for these belts are: Belt 1: (Pre-Contact) 13ft wide x 3ft high Belt 2: (Conflict) 15ft w x 3ft h Belt 3: (Post Conflict) 6ft w x 3ft h Belt 4: (Pequots Today) 6ft w x 3ft h What are specific skills needed for the project? I would prefer that the freelancer be very fluid in their use of Adobe Illustrator. Therefore, all the designs must be delivered in the Adobe Illustrator file format, with all layers intact. These designs will not use fonts. Technical: is there a specific development language the freelancer needs to know? Again, while there is some creative freedom allowed in this project, the purple patterns in the wampum belts (shown in the photos) must be maintained and prominent in each belt design. The patterns already properly tell a story and depicts each era. PLEASE NOTE: The photos provided have a brown hue to some of them. White and Purple are the only colors to use. Creative: is there existing documentation already in a certain format? (.pdf, .ai, .eps, etc.) or program (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.)? Adobe Illustrator must be used. Digital Art files must be delivered in Adobe Illustrator file format. Prefer .AI File Format (Native Illustrator Format) Must be the primary format for Illustrator documents. Must support Backward Compatibility so that print houses can work with the freelancer final design final to support saving in older versions (e.g., Illustrator CC, CS6) LOGISTICS: 1. What is the project deadline? Monday, June 2nd. Need one milestone, (May 29th) The millstone is needed before the final deadline to see how the design process is going, and to get a look at one of the belt designs, and advise if any changes are needed. 2. How much do you want to spend on this project? $350.00 (Negotiable) Fixed Price. Questions for the freelance. (I do consider how these are answered in my decision) Question 1: Give me one example of a high-profile client you have worked for that I may know or who I can reach out to for a reference? Question 2 What kind of projects do you tend to like to work on, and why? I will provide reference photos of real wampum belts and additional resources to read about these belts.
