Contract Mechanical Engineer – Roll-to-Roll System Design (MVP Stage) Rhoic, Inc. | Emeryville, CA | 2 Week Project | Immediate Start Preferred About Us Rhoic is an early-stage climate hardware startup building next-generation high-throughput nanofiber manufacturing systems. Our technology powers scalable solutions for filtration, energy, and environmental remediation. We're seeking a contract mechanical engineer to design and install our first roll-to-roll (R2R) system. The Role You’ll be responsible for designing a modular 3-zone roll-to-roll platform that integrates with our existing 3’x6’ frame. The system must enable stable nanofiber deposition and be engineered with future upgrades in mind (e.g., servo controls, tension feedback, advanced registration systems). You’ll work closely with our founder, an experienced materials scientist and engineer, to ensure the system meets functional, fabrication, and long-term usability requirements. Key Responsibilities - Deliver full CAD and drawing package for all mechanical components and assemblies - Define and layout unwind, process, and rewind zones with appropriate web paths - Design passive dancer mechanism with a defined servo upgrade path - Integrate and install mounts, motors, brakes, load cells, and roller hardware - Code firmware to ensure components work as intended - Ensure compatibility with Rhoic’s existing frame structure and process goals - Source parts including necessary fabricated and commercial components - Provide BOM (Rhoic will purchase components) - Complete assembly and validate functionality (on-site in Emeryville, CA) - Provide detailed documentation You Should Have - 5+ years of mechanical design experience, ideally with roll-to-roll or web-handling systems - Strong proficiency with CAD tools (Rhoic can provide Fusion 360) - Demonstrated ability to deliver complete mechanical design packages - Understanding of tension zones, motor control integration, and precision assembly - Excellent communication and documentation skills - Availability to begin within days and deliver initial output within 2 weeks Timeline & Commitment - Target timeline: 2 weeks to design freeze and fabrication handoff - On-site assembly participation expected; remote design work possible
