Project Overview: Self-Contained Spray Paint Gun Using Standard Aerosol Cans I’m developing a handheld spray paint gun that uses off-the-shelf aerosol spray paint cans (like Montana, Rust-Oleum, etc.) as sealed cartridges. This device functions similarly to a whipped cream dispenser or CO₂ charger system, where the can is fully enclosed and activated by screwing it into the bottom of the gun. ⸻ Key Features: • Self-contained system – No external air hose or compressor. • Threaded cartridge housing – Spray can is inserted into a custom sleeve with cut-out side windows to view the label and paint level. The sleeve screws into the bottom of the gun. • Internal puncture mechanism – As the cartridge is tightened, the gun engages the can’s valve (not the cap) via a puncture-style actuator — similar to how a whipped cream canister taps a CO₂ cartridge. • Internal needle + trigger mechanism – Trigger retracts a needle in the nozzle to control paint flow, mimicking the feel of an airbrush (circular spray pattern). • No fan control knob or air cap — atomization is handled internally with pressure and nozzle geometry. • Must be engineered for standard pressurized spray paint — including seal safety, leak prevention, and precise trigger actuation. ⸻ What I Need Help With: • Mechanical engineering & industrial design — to prototype and test this system. • CAD development for 3D modeling and early-stage functional prototyping. • Material selection for the cartridge housing, puncture interface, and nozzle system.
