Project Overview: We’re seeking a seasoned Twilio specialist to join our team on Upwork. You’ll own our Twilio integration end-to-end: from account provisioning and configuration through ongoing management and the design, development, and maintenance of all Twilio-powered voice/SMS APIs and workflows. If you’re comfortable diving into both high-level architecture and hands-on code (PHP/Node/Python), this is the role for you. Key Responsibilities Twilio Account Management Provision and configure phone numbers, messaging services, SIP domains, etc. Monitor usage, handle compliance (A2P, 10DLC), troubleshoot carrier issues. API & Workflow Development Design and build REST API endpoints (e.g. PHP or Node) that send/receive calls & SMS. Implement TwiML call flows: forwarding, call transfers, recordings, conference calls. Develop webhook listeners for inbound events (calls, SMS, recordings, delivery status). Integration & Coordination Collaborate with internal teams (frontend, backend, DevOps) to embed Twilio services into our SaaS. Define data models, database schemas, and security practices for storing call/SMS logs and recordings. Ongoing Support & Optimization Set up monitoring/alerting for failed calls, high latency, message delivery issues. Optimize API performance, scale for high volumes, and implement retry/fallback logic. Maintain comprehensive documentation (API specs, runbooks, architectural diagrams). Required Skills & Experience Hands-on Twilio Expertise (3+ years) Deep knowledge of Twilio’s Programmable Voice, SMS, Verify, and/or SIP features. Strong command of TwiML, Studio Flows, TaskRouter, and the Twilio Console. Backend Development Proficiency in at least one: PHP, Node.js, or Python. Experience designing RESTful APIs, securing endpoints (OAuth, API keys). Webhooks & Real-time Handling Building reliable webhooks for inbound call/SMS events; processing callbacks. Familiarity with handling media (call recording URLs, transcription). Database & Architecture Comfortable designing schemas for multi-tenant or high-throughput systems. Experience with MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL. DevOps & Monitoring Ability to deploy to shared hosting or cloud (AWS, DigitalOcean). Familiarity with logging, alerting (e.g. Papertrail, CloudWatch) for telephony events. Communication & Collaboration Clear written English for documentation and Upwork updates. Comfortable coordinating across time zones and agile sprints. Nice-to-Have Prior experience building softphone or integrated browser-based calling interfaces. SMS campaign management: cadence, follow-ups, unsubscribe handling. AI integrations (e.g., call transcription + sentiment analysis via OpenAI). Familiarity with multi-tenant SaaS patterns and API key management.
