COMPANY DESCRIPTION We are a VoIP (Voice Over IP) telecom company. We provide digital phone services for over 17,000 phone lines across the United States. Our infrastructure (consisting of VMWare hosts) resides in 5 data centers running both development and production workloads. ROLE DESCRIPTION This is a fractional (part-time) remote role for a DevOps Engineer. The DevOps Engineer will be required to have extensive knowledge of Linux (CentOS + Debian), SSH, VMWare, and Git, and be able to handle networking and network troubleshooting (ping, mtr, etc.). Additionally, you must be knowledgeable or willing to learn MariaDB + Galera (basically replicated MySQL), Redis + Sentinel (replicated Redis), and Docker Swarm. QUALIFICATIONS - Linux (our older VMs run CentOS, newer ones run Debian 11/12) - SSH for logging into VMs - Working with VPNs, since the infrastructure is firewalled - VMWare vSphere 8.0 for managing the physical hosts and virtual machines - Networking knowledge (IPv4 spaces, DNS management with Cloudflare) - Some Git experience (our software engineer will help with deployment of software upgrades) - Experience with MariaDB in a replicated fashion (Galera) is a major plus - Experience with Docker Swarm is a major plus - Experience with Redis in a replicated fashion (Sentinel) is a major plus RESPONSIBILITIES - Monitor infrastructure (both physical and virtual) for anomalies, failing hard drives, etc. - Be available for emergencies, such as server outages, which can happen at any time. These are rare but do happen. We use Graylog, Zabbix, Pingdom, and Homer to monitor infrastructure. Alerts are delivered via Email and Slack when events occur. - Spin up new Virtual Machines in VMWare as our product/platform grows. - Deploy updates to our Laravel-based web application (this is what users log into to manage their phone systems and run reports) - Use SSH + the command line to diagnose problems, such as packet loss between datacenter sites, stuck faxes, voicemail delivery issues, etc. - Contact our fiber carrier for assistance if packet loss is detected between datacenter sites - Repair broken clusters if necessary (sometimes, packet loss can cause one of the MariaDB clusters to become de-synchronized, or cause the Docker management cluster to become de-synchronized)
