Hardest Math Problem Student Contest Content Expert Developer | May-July, 2025 Program Overview The Hardest Math Problem Student Contest is an annual competition presented by The Actuarial Foundation and the New York Life Foundation that challenges grades 6–8 students to solve multistep, grade-appropriate math problems with real-world situations and engaging characters. Note: 5th graders are eligible to participate by reaching a higher grade level. The contest is structured into two phases: Challenge 1 (Fall 2025) and Challenge 2 (Spring 2026) where students who submitted a correct solution to Challenge 1 are invited to participate in Challenge 2. Student winners of Challenge 2 are awarded a laptop computer and $3,000 in a 529 College Savings plan. For more information on the program visit: https://www.hardestmathproblem.org/. Role Summary & Key Responsibilities As an HMP Content Expert, your experience as a Middle School Math Teacher who has recent experience teaching in middle school classrooms in the U.S. or its territories will inform your primary responsibilities to design, create, review, and provide feedback on Grades 6-8 math word problem contest problems and supporting materials for the 2025-26 HMP Contest. Past HMP problems can be found here for reference: https://www.hardestmathproblem.org/past-problems/. Your expertise with the curriculum and standards at the middle school level and solving mathematical word problems will play a crucial role in preparing materials for the contest with: --Contest Problems Creation: Propose and create 5-6 unique and creative challenging math word problems and relevant datasets (if applicable) that aligns with grade level appropriate skills, content standards, specified theme, and contest goals. --Problem Review & Feedback: Provide feedback and collaborate with challenge staff to evaluate created contest problems, sample solutions for the answer key, and provide constructive feedback, tips, and suggested materials for the HMP Teacher’s Guide. Review and edit final drafts of Contest word problems for accuracy, coherence, and mathematical rigor. Identify any errors, ambiguities, or inconsistencies and propose necessary revisions. Expected Time Commitment & Compensation $200 for an estimated 10 total hours May-July 2025: 2 hours of virtual meetings; 8 hours of content development, review, and feedback Role Timeline (tentative) --Deadline to apply: May 5, 2025 --Virtual Meeting #1 week of May 19 (exact date + time TBD) --Virtual Meeting #2 week of June 9 (exact date + time TBD) --Completion of materials development: July 15, 2025 --Compensation awarded: July 31, 2025 Eligibility & Qualifications: --Bachelor's degree in middle school math education or a closely related field (teaching certificate or license preferred) --Recent experience (within the last 5 years) and expertise working with middle school students in the United States and its territories in mathematics education and mathematical word problems at the middle school level --Strong knowledge of middle school math curriculum and content standards, including relevant problem-solving techniques and strategies --Strong creative skills in creating challenging, multi-step, engaging word problems that uniquely target grade-level appropriate skills --Excellent verbal and written communication skills to provide clear explanations and constructive feedback --Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate problem analysis and review --Passion for mathematics and a desire to inspire and motivate students in their mathematical journey through engagement --Coaching Eligibility Note: Please note that your participation in content development will prevent you from coaching any teams in the contest for the 2025-26 HMP in accordance with the rules of the Contest.
