We're a boutique HR consulting firm that supports startups and mission-driven organizations in building the people infrastructure they need to scale. We’re seeking a seasoned HR Consultant to serve as the strategic and operational lead across multiple client accounts. This role blends hands-on HR execution with high-level advisory support, helping clients navigate compliance, employee relations, policy development, and organizational design. As an HR Consultant, you’ll act as the primary HR partner for client organizations—often serving as their first internal HR resource. You’ll lead projects end to end, from developing handbooks and investigating sensitive employee matters to implementing performance frameworks and building scalable SOPs. Your ability to handle complex situations with clarity, discretion, and confidence is essential to success in this role. Key Responsibilities - Serve as the lead HR consultant for assigned clients, managing projects across compliance, employee relations, and strategic HR infrastructure - Conduct HR audits and implement policies and procedures that align with federal, state, and local regulations - Lead employee relations efforts including investigations, corrective action plans, and documentation for high-risk issues - Draft and implement employee handbooks, offer letters, policy documents, and internal communications - Design and operationalize performance management systems and review processes - Build scalable onboarding, offboarding, and leave-of-absence workflows - Provide advisory support on job architecture, leveling, compensation structure, and team design - Collaborate directly with founders, executive teams, and operational leads to align HR practices with business strategy - Manage project timelines and expectations across multiple clients simultaneously - Provide mentorship to junior team members or contractors involved in shared projects Qualifications - Minimum of 7 years of progressive HR experience, with a strong background in generalist or HRBP roles - Demonstrated expertise in California employment law and multi-state compliance - Proven experience leading sensitive employee relations matters, including investigations and high-risk exits - Exceptional written communication skills with experience drafting handbooks, policies, and procedural documents - Strong client management skills with the ability to quickly build trust and credibility with executives - Experience designing or supporting performance management cycles and organizational design - Proficiency or familiarity with HR tech platforms such as Rippling, Gusto, BambooHR, or ADP This is a contract position, with an estimated workload of 20–30 hours per week.. You’ll be expected to manage multiple client relationships, take ownership of deliverables, and contribute to the growth and stability of the firm’s consulting practice.
