Seeking Fractional CFO to Build Payroll & Financial Tracking Systems

We’re seeking an experienced Fractional CFO to help us establish and optimize our financial foundation. This role will focus on designing and implementing a new payroll system for employees, contractors, and vendors, and helping us track and analyze financial expenses accurately. The ideal candidate has experience in both SMB and enterprise environments, and can guide us in developing the right financial metrics and KPIs to support intelligent decision-making and growth. Key Responsibilities: Payroll & Compensation Systems: Implement and oversee payroll systems for W2 employees, 1099 contractors, and vendor payments. Ensure compliance with tax, labor, and regulatory obligations. Recommend tools or platforms (e.g., Gusto, ADP, QuickBooks Payroll, etc.) suited for our structure. Financial Infrastructure & Tracking: Establish systems and workflows to begin tracking and categorizing financial expenses. Design a chart of accounts aligned with service lines and departments. Set up internal reporting to track actuals vs. budgets. Strategic Financial Guidance: Identify key financial metrics and KPIs to support operations and growth. Provide forecasting, scenario planning, and cash flow management insights. Assist in preparing investor-ready financials if/when needed. Oversight & Best Practices: Establish financial controls and scalable processes for accounts payable and receivable. Review contracts and vendor agreements for financial implications. Collaborate with internal teams and third-party accountants or bookkeepers. Qualifications: Proven experience as a CFO, Controller, or senior finance leader in both SMB and enterprise settings. Familiarity with SaaS or professional services businesses (preferred). Hands-on experience implementing or managing payroll systems and expense tracking tools. Strong command of financial reporting, forecasting, and cash flow management. Ability to work independently, communicate clearly, and build processes from the ground up. CPA or MBA (preferred but not required).
