Hi future Designer, Simply, I need a backyard HARDSCAPE design. This design will start from an existing porch and extend uninterrupted into the yard, with some variable trees that need to be accounted. The design will also extend slightly around the house side. In total, the area to design is a minor “L” shape with an approximate area of 1750sf. Cleaning tree leaves in the spring and fall are a priority, but it does not mean we should pave the entire area with concrete. I am a licensed architect, and I will provide my own digital background survey file for your use, at my risk. Please refer to my schedule for our proposed process. MAINTENANCE: I would like you to provide a durable, medium maintenance hardscape, because a low maintenance design doesn’t exist. The design should consist of available, cited (website), materials and vendors information, located regionally within let’s say twenty miles, reasonably. UTILITIES: I expect you to consider two additional items: installing landscape lighting and revising the existing irrigation system. Both suggestions should be documented on the plans. I will provide the existing information, but you will need to indicate how you think the utilities design should be added (lighting), or rerouted (sprinkler). Keep it simple, I’m not asking for you to be a trade expert, only just to take them into consideration. SHADING AND GATHERING SPACES: The plan should incorporate shading and gathering spaces. FIREPLACE (circular gas pit): No further explanation, but it should be a plan feature and taken into consideration. We will build this feature. I have available natural gas off the porch that the new plan is to attach. FURNITURE: Combination of loose and built in place. Refer to Gathering Spaces. Any furniture suggestions to design around are appreciated but not required CONSTRUCTION: I expect that you will be able to provide schematic design drawings to a level that a trade can follow the installation. You will be able to discussion constructability. The drawings should illustrate simple schematic detail section cuts as you determine. For example concrete steps. If you show steps, let’s understand what the base material is building up the slab steps underneath the steps. If you show a retention wall, or seating wall, anything you show should be constructable using conventional methods that I could possible do some of the trade-work myself. Can we work together on this item? WATER FEATURE(S): Your design should include a future hot tub and dive pool; please include a fountain of some sort for sound that can be incorporated into either the hot tub/dive pool design. Your design should not revolve around these water features and should only be indicated as a future dash. However, you should be experienced enough in this profession that you can suggest the remote plumbing design and filtration of either system on our plan. You should understand this would be a delegated design to a vendor, but we at least should anticipate it. MATERIALS: I do not want to research the hardscape materials. I would appreciate some sort of finish legend and where to find it; it does not have to be a schedule on the sheets. I do not want a Home Depot materials design. The final installation should reflect careful use of quality materials where they are important, and generic where not. PROCESS: I would love if you can provide 1.) An initial design. 2.) An owner review. 3.) Revised design #01. 4.) Owner review. 5.) Revised design #02. * By “revised” I am just referring to us have a collective conversation and picking up small changes. This is negotiable but in my mind I would think a person should create solutions within a half day (four hour) work period for each of the five steps. You do not have to follow this process however I want to have the availability to provide feedback, that’s it. You can suggest a process as well. DELIVERABLES: A. Overall plan; for construction layout. B. Material legend with plan callouts. C. Lighting and sprinkler utility suggestions. D. Sheet drawing with important limited detail sections. LANDSCAPE: Plants, trees, shrubs, and turf should be considered in this plan to complete the presentation. Ultimately, I would appreciate you focusing on a really solid hardscape plan but it will consider the landscape. You can complete the landscape yourself, which I would think inclusive to your design, or otherwise I will consult with a local nursery. My preference is to work with you on a complete design, and it’s fee negotiable. CONSTRUCTION BUDGET: The hardscape, lighting, and sprinkler should be readily achievable for under $10K. This is the priority. I am willing to invest another $5k for shading, but it has to be good and very integral to the solution. It will be considered an alternate. Finally, I want to be convinced I need a clever water feature/plunge pool/shallow pool or ANY creative water feature. We want something like this, but everything we see is such a limited purpose. This will be a difficult topic to solve, but happy to have a conversation, and would love to have something clever. Thank you so much for taking my project on in consideration. There is a lot to entail, but you can keep the outcome simple. I would rather give you all my thoughts and be reasoned with by design, than to give you no thoughts to work off. Regards, Ryun
